Understanding the language is the first step in gaining a deep understanding to anything. These are 122 hockey terms that will set your player(s) up for success.
Some examples:
- Dot Line - Imaginary line from end wall to end wall that runs through the faceoff dots. This is referenced when talking “inside the dots.”
- Downforce - Force put into the ice, either by skating or shooting.
- Elbow - Space where the top of the circle are in the OZ and DZ.
- False Movement - Moving into space to drag a defender with you in order to make valuable space or conditions for a teammate
- Fishing - The act of standing outside of a battle while using your stick to try and pry the puck out. It’s typically encapsulated by poor body positioning when battling to win the puck.
- Five hole – The area between the goaltender’s legs.
- Forecheck – Applied pressure against a team attempting to get the puck out of their defensive end.
- Fly-by – When a player moves past an opponent with little to no resistance.
